Nutrition for your dog
![]() |
Did you know that dogs are omnivores? Yep, and that means that they require both meat and vegetables for sound health. In addition to meats and veggies, your dog needs to digest the correct amount of protein, fats, and carbohydrate as well.
As an important aid to digestion it is vital to remember that your dog needs to drink just as much water as it eats. And like us, they require feeding according to their size, according to their shape, their age, and lifestyle too. For example, the diet of a pregnant female dog will obviously be different than a hard working dog on a farm. Your puppies will need a different diet than an adult, etc.
What are my options to choose from when feeding my dog?
The first thing that comes to mind is canned foods. There is a very wide variety to choose from in stores. Canned foods are also extremely convenient to use for feeding your dog. From a nutritional standpoint though these dog food products are not ideal. They contain over 70% water that is mixed with bits of fish and meat products plus cereal mixture. Your dog may experience low energy by eating only canned foods and will also need to eat a lot more of it to get the nutrition their body needs.
There are also canned foods that are 'all meat'. As the title says, these dog food products contain only meat. Your dog will have to eat a lot of these as well because the nutrition is unbalanced. If you do decide to feed your dog all meat canned foods then be sure that it is combined with any type of mixer.
Hard dry foods are another option here when feeding your dog. They have only 10% water in them as content which is much better than canned foods. Although this leaves room for more nutrition it is still advisable to use them as mixers to provide the additional
nutrients that they need. The advantages of dry foods for your dog is that they can be stored in large quantities and are much cheaper to purchase than some other dog food types.
And lastly, feeding your dog home cooked food is a also a very popular and handy way to give your dog all of the nutrition that he or she needs. You still must change a few choices that you feed the dog because they are dogs after all and have slightly different ratios of macro-nutrients needed than people do. The best way to go about this is by purchasing any dog recipes that are on the market. These dog recipes that are available can be bought either online or off line as well.
This article is just a brief summary of a total dog nutrition-oriented diet and we hope that you have enjoyed the information.
